IoT Midlands Meetup #2: Show and Tell

July 16, 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a buzzword. Definitions as to what IoT actually is vary considerably, but its foundation could be considered to be connecting everyday physical ‘Things’ to the Internet. The data from Things can then be shared. Existing Things will need to be hooked up to the Internet. New Things will be required. New data clouds will proliferate. New services and business models can be formed.

Nobody quite knows where it will go but elements of this are already happening. You can monitor your home, your health and your pets today. Industry is tracking goods, vehicles and communities. More examples are here: http://postscapes.com/internet-of-things-examples/.

How do West Midlands Small and Medium sized businesses (SMEs) capitalise on this projected market explosion? Opportunities abound for existing companies to adapt their existing products to be ‘connected’, invent new products, or prepare to deliver services in a different way. Collaborations will be needed – no one company can do everything.

IIPSI will try to assist in this growth by hosting the first West Midlands SME meetup on the subject. The aim is to build a community of likeminded organisations willing to collaborate and explore, and innovate with IoT products or application.

This event will be an informal ‘Show and Tell’ event, featuring short talks from those innovating within the ‘Internet of Things’. Come and meet, explore and be inspired.

  • David Roberts, COO and co-founder of Droplet. “Taking nano-payments for the transfer of IoT data.”
  • Carolyn Parkinson, Technology Transfer Specialist at WMG. “The importance of the User in the Internet of Things.”

  • Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino, Founder of Good Night Lamp and organiser of the IoT London Meetups. “10 things to consider if you are pushing an #iot product to market”.

Speakers will start at 7pm sharp, and present for 10 mins with 5 mins Q&A session each. The closing summary will include information on any IoT funding opportunities that may be available.

The International Institute for Product and Service Innovation (IIPSI) is marked as Building Number 27 on the University of Warwick campus map found here: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/maps/campusmap/.
