Birmingham start-up wins international UberPITCH competition

Mary Matthews, Founder of Birmingham-based start-up Memrica, has been announced as one of just four winners across Europe selected for this year’s UberPITCH competition.

Based at Innovation Birmingham Campus, Mary was selected from over 4000 entries from 21 countries to win following her UberPITCH ride, which saw her deliver an impressive 10-minute pitch to an investor and spend a further 10 minutes delivering feedback on her proposal.

UberPITCH is a European start-up competition which connects entrepreneurs to some of the region’s top investors, supported by partners Atomico, EQT and Seedcamp. After being selected, Mary was awarded a once in a lifetime trip to Berlin to meet Uber Founder, Travis Kalanick.

Memrica Prompt is a smartphone and tablet application which helps people live well with memory problems, by reminding users about names, events, places and everyday tasks. A smart reminder service collates data, image and sound files to ensure everything needed for a task, event or appointment is available in one place.

Mary Matthews, Founder of Memrica, said: “Wow, what an honour to be chosen. It’s been an amazing experience and fantastic to meet Travis, who was generous with his time and gave some great advice. I want to thank Silicon Canal for bringing the opportunity to Birmingham – it goes to show we have world class businesses here.”

Memrica is one of 15 early-stage companies receiving support from Innovation Birmingham’s e4f Inspire programme, which delivers a series of workshops, keynote events, entrepreneur dinners, off-site visits, funded internship/apprenticeship placements, and peer group sessions, in order to accelerate the growth of entrepreneurial tech companies.
