Transforming the health of Birmingham through Climate innovations

October 12, 2016

Later this month, Climate-KIC’s annual Climathon will be kicking off and we are on the look-out for keen innovators who want to help solve the city’s climate-related challenges and improve public health.

Climathon is a global 24-hour climate change event which will take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 28 October 2016. Bringing together the challenges of the world’s cities with the people who have the passion and ability to solve them, participants gather for 24 hours to engage in a climate-related problem solving workshop. Citizens across the world will get to take direct climate action in their own cities by coming up with innovative solutions to local climate change problems.

After 24 intense hours of collaboration, excitement and solution-finding, the best idea will be selected by a judging panel consisting of EIT Health, Birmingham City Council and Climate-KIC.

Last year’s Climathon saw 19 cities around the world take part in the first Climathon challenge on 18 June 2015. Climathon engaged more than 2.6 million people worldwide to take climate action. Winners of the city challenges showcased their solutions during the Paris Climate Summit.

Climate-KIC is the EU’s largest public private partnership addressing climate change through innovation to build a zero carbon economy. We address climate change across four priority themes: urban areas, land use, production systems, and decision metrics and finance. Education is at the heart of these themes to inspire and empower the next generation of climate leaders.

Climate-KIC is supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.

Katharine Fuller, Head of Projects at Innovation Birmingham, said: “Birmingham is facing a number of health challenges around reducing childhood obesity, improving independence of older people and those with disabilities and future-proofing the health care system.

“With a strong ethic of collaboration that has allowed it to achieve so many great things, there are many opportunities to work together to make Birmingham greener.  From innovations that enable healthier, greener transport options to innovations which reduce waste in the health care industry and everything in between. This event will be a fantastic opportunity for us to address such issues and look at positive way to tackle them.”

Join the 24 hour #Climathon challenge and come up with climate innovation solutions on how we can address Birmingham’s public health challenges in a sustainable and climate smart manner.
