Innovation Birmingham-based HealthTech company Medstars has been recognised as one of the top businesses to apply for the European Institute of Innovation and Technology’s (EIT) Headstart Funding Programme.
Two senior Birmingham-based doctors Dr Mahnaz Hashmi and Dr Barry Lambert, Founders of Medstars, were shortlisted alongside just 19 other businesses from across the UK and Ireland to pitch at the 2018 Headstart Finals in Liverpool.
Taking place in June, the Finals commended innovative SMEs working to drive healthy living, support active ageing and improve healthcare.
Awarding a total of ten prizes each worth €50,000, digital health companies across all EIT-supported locations had the opportunity to stake a claim for growth and receive a funding boost. Having outlined Medstars’ growth plans as part of a designated four-minute pitch at the event, co-founder Dr Mahnaz Hashmi said:
“It was a great experience to pitch in front of a key research and development agency actively involved in generating funding for emerging companies developing new products and services.
“We exchanged ideas with the best health start-ups in the UK, which will only help us on our journey to supporting private patients with finding the right clinician and improving transparency within private healthcare.”
The Headstart Funding Programme aims to drive economic growth and prosperity for small businesses and encourage entrepreneurship and innovation in the healthcare sector.
Tasked with improving healthy living in Europe, the EIT is providing access to innovation facilities, mentoring and support framework for promising companies to ensure the potential of their innovations is maximised.
Since the pilot website was launched in 2015, Medstars has grown its community of practitioners across the UK, already supporting individuals suffering with mental and physical health problems and injuries, offering second opinions for complex conditions.
Set up by senior doctors, it is the only company of its type that the NHS has invested in. Its free patient service is designed to help patients find, book and connect with an approved, regulated practitioner, instantly.
The service offers access to a single curated community of trusted health professionals who share values of openness and transparency.
Now actively looking to grow the business, Medstars is seeking investment to fully develop and implement the solution within the healthcare market.
